Share of Fish Reared Has Grown in the Smolensk Region

This was reported by Rostislav Rovbel, Deputy Governor of the Smolensk Region, during his working meeting with Alexander Ginsburg, CEO of Smolenskrybhoz JSC.

Fish farming is a relatively young business, that we are currently promoting in the Smolensk Region. However, we have achieved good results. For nine months of 2018, 620 tons of commodity fish have been produced in the Smolensk Region, which is 28% more compared to the similar period in 2017. The largest amount of fish has been grown by Sadki enterprise (283 tons of fish) and Smolenskrybhoz (141 tons of fish),” noted Rostislav Rovbel.

It was noted during the meeting that the Smolensk Region has good prospects for industrial fish cultivation. This is facilitated by availability of a large number of rivers, lakes, ponds and reservoirs. In addition, the Russian legislation serves as a driver for developing aquaculture in Russia, for example, through prohibiting sturgeon capturing.

Besides, in 2019 the regional authorities are expected to support fish farms located in the Smolensk Region with a separate subsidy, which will be allocated under the regional program.

We consider commercial fish farming to be a well promising industry and are eager to develop its potential to the full extent possible. I have already used the experience of Sadki company with their investment project as a successful example - for three years of its operation, the company reached the leading position not only at the regional level, but at the national one as well. In the near future the company will start producing fish for sale. Creation of new enterprises is on the way, which is also worth noting. During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Governor Alexey Ostrovsky signed an agreement stipulating construction of a fish farm within the region, designed for cultivating thousands of tons of commodity trout per annum, which is being built in accordance with the plans shaped before,” pointed out Rostislav Rovbel.
