THE REGION HAS A RICH POTENTIAL IN NATURE, CULTURE AND TOURISM
There are about 60 museums in Smolensk region, and 2703 sites of cultural heritage (monuments of history and culture). 1080 sites of archaeological significance were discovered. Smolensk, the region's capital, is one of the oldest cities in Russia, and has a very eventful history. Celebration of Smolensk's 1150th anniversary was held in 2013.
Some of the important tourist attractions of the region are the Vyazma Kremlin and Smolensk fortress wall, archaeological complex "Gnezdovo mounds", reserve of history and art "Talashkino", State Memorial Complex "Katyn", recreation area "Krasny bor" and others.
The most potential for developing tourism and eco-tourism in the region lies in the conservation areas of the national park "Smolensk lake district" and nature park "Gagarinsky".
